A large number of bridges all over the world date back to the 1950s and 1960s and are approaching, or are already beyond, the end of their design lifetime. Costs related to their maintenance reach quite a high percentage of the construction budget, and additional costs in terms of traffic delay are due to downtime related to inspection and maintenance interventions. Faced with increased constraints in financing maintenance interventions at a large scale, authorities, transport administrations, owners and managers require methods to support the allocation of resources in the most efficient way. An important step toward this goal would be a European wide coordinated and cooperative effort for the adoption of harmonized inspection and monitoring procedures across connecting transport networks. The research group is currently working on several aspects related to methods and tools for the acquisition of information to support bridge management systems. A large effort is being devoted to the analysis and comparison of the current guidelines and technical documents enforced in different countries to the aim of identifying differences and similarities toward the harmonization of practices. Furthermore, SHM standardization is also investigated by the research group in the realm of research projects with the goal of facilitating the achievement of consensus among stakeholders and build confidence and trust in this technology.
