In 2018, Regione Lombardia (RL) and Politecnico di Milano (PoliMI) established a collaboration agreement aimed to improve the effectiveness of integrity management of the regional roadway infrastructure. To this aim, a joint research project was launched to develop criteria and regional guidelines for the acquisition of information about the infrastructure performance and their use as decision support tools for the effective management of the available resources. One of the objectives of the project was the development of regional guidelines for the design of structural monitoring systems. The guidelines have been developed and currently, 9 monitoring systems have been installed on bridges in the Lombardia region and continuously provide data that are and will be used for research purposes.
